How To Dress Up A Pair Of Jeans
Mar 09, 2011 //

Jeans are one of the most versatile items of clothing in any man’s wardrobe. Dressed down with a pair of trainers and a comfortable tee shirt, or dressed up with a smart shirt and shoes, they are suitable for most occasions. There are, however, certain rules you should follow when dressing up a pair of mens jeans and we’ll take a look at these in further detail.
Jeans are not trousers
The golden rule to remember when dressing up a pair of jeans is that they should never be used as a replacement for a pair of smart trousers. If you’re wearing a dress shirt, then it is unlikely to look good with even the smartest pair of jeans.
Get the right style
Generally, well-fitted straight or bootcut jeans are the ones to go for if you are pairing with a shirt or smart knitwear. Avoid long, turned up or carpenter jeans which are anything but stylish.
Make sure they fit
Wearing a pair of baggy jeans around the house is fine, but is a cardinal sin when dressing up. If you are going for a smart casual look, it is essential to make sure that your jeans are a good fit, which means not to long, short, or loose around the waist.
Get your colors right
If you’re going for a jeans and shirt combo, make sure that the colours don’t clash. For example, a patterned or striped shirt would look good with a pair of dark blue or black jeans, but not faded ones. If you’re going for jeans with fading, make sure the top you choose is plain to avoid color overload. As a rule dark jeans, rather than stonewash lend themselves to a smarter look.
Choosing the right shoes
If it’s a smart look you’re going for, make sure your shoes don’t let you down. Stylish jeans and a shirt need a pair of smart brown or black loafers or brogues to complete the look. As a rule, brown shoes look good with most denim, but don’t go for black shoes with dark blue denim.
